A staff writer at the Penn State Daily Collegian has been suspended for fabricating quotes from Joe Paterno’s widow about the opening of the Paterno Catholic Center.
Editor Casey McDermott also said other work by the reporter is being scrutinized for problems after the reporter admitted to making up the quotes for Sept. 7 article, which was published online and on the front page of the paper.
In an editor’s note about the incident, McDermott wrote:
The relationship between the Collegian and the public is one built on trust — that applies to both the people who read our work and the people we rely on as sources while producing our content. In this case, we risk severely jeopardizing trust in both of those areas. For that, I apologize on behalf of the Collegian.
