Police: Wounded Philly officer conspired to blame wife

An officer conspired with his ex-wife’s brother to spread false information after being shot while off-duty, according to the Philadelphia Police Department.

Officer Robert Penn was arrested Tuesday on charges of criminal solicitation, criminal conspiracy and obstructing the administration of law.

The 48-year-old Penn has been suspended for 30 days with the intent to dismiss.

Penn’s former brother-in-law, Charles May, was also arrested. Police did not specify charges against him.

Information on lawyers who could comment on the charges was not immediately available.

Police say Penn paid Mays to anonymously call newspapers and implicate Penn’s current wife as being involved in the March 2011 shooting.

Penn was shot once in the right shoulder as he got out of his car after arriving home from work.
