Police: 2 dead after car plunges into Schuylkill River canal

Authorities say they are investigating an accident in which a car plunged into an eastern Pennsylvania canal, killing two of the four people inside.

The Montgomery County district attorney’s office said the crash happened shortly after 11:30 p.m. Monday near Lock 60 in the Schuylkill Canal Park in Upper Providence Township.

Authorities said the driver apparently backed the car up out of a parking area, went over the paved canal roadway and onto a grass embankment “causing the car to flip into the canal.” Emergency responders found the car on its roof in the water.

Authorities said 25-year-old Lauren Ann Magargal and 29-year-old Clinton Berger drowned. The 21-year-old driver and a 25-year-old rear seat passenger were able to get out of the car after it entered the water.
