Philly a finalist for Race to the Top education funding

    The School District of Philadelphia is one of 61 finalists for the Race to the Top District competition, and in the next few weeks could be named a winner.Fifteen to 25 districts will get four-year awards for as much as $40 million for programs that “personalize and deepen student learning, directly improve student achievement and educator effectiveness, close achievement gaps, and prepare every student for success in college and careers.”

    The U.S. Department of Education received more than 300 applications, all of which were read and scored by three-person panels.

    Awards will be announced by the end of the year.
