Parkway to get 3rd lane in south Jersey

Officials are promising a smoother and safer ride when a third lane is added to the Garden State Parkway in Atlantic County.

The New Jersey Turnpike Authority approved the $36.2 million project, which is slated to begin in late August or early September. The work will take place in both directions between mileposts 42.3 in Galloway Township and 48 in Port Republic.

Authority spokesman Tom Feeney tells The Press of Atlantic City the extra lane will reduce congestion and the full-width shoulders will allow motorists to park disabled vehicles outside travel lanes.

The widening is the next phase of a $900 million project to add lanes on the parkway from Toms River to Egg Harbor Township.
