Officer disarms man firing AR-15, drawing praise

Philadelphia’s police commissioner says an officer showed “unbelievable restraint” in disarming a man firing off an AR-15 assault weapon on a city street.

Officer Kollin Berg tells WPVI-TV he was patrolling alone Wednesday afternoon when he heard a series of gunshots and saw a man firing into the air on 20th Street in North Philadelphia.

Berg says he pulled his gun and twice shouted “police, drop the weapon” before the man complied.

The station reports 39-year-old Eric Barnes legally owned the gut but faces firearms violations and reckless endangerment charges. He’s jailed in lieu of 10 percent of $100,000 bail.

Berg, an 8-year Army veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, says he was following training.

Commissioner Charles Ramsey says it’s an example of the good work police do.
