Man trying to run down police killed in Upper Darby

Upper Darby police shot a man as he attempted to run them down in a car, authorities say.

The 52-year-old was killed Tuesday afternoon as police ordered him out of his car, and he appeared ready to accelerate at officers manning a blockade.

Police didn’t immediately release the name of the man, who was wanted for allegedly threatening to kill police and FBI agents in a video posted online.

Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said the officers feared for their lives and “did what they had to do.”

Police said they began following him after he left a Clifton Heights home. When they stopped him and ordered him out of the car, he allegedly reversed into a police vehicle then prepared to run over other officers.
