Man fatally shot in Germantown identified as father of LA Lakers player

The 57-year-old man fatally shot in Germantown on Sunday has been identified as Wayne Ellington Sr., whose namesake son plays professional basketball for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Just after 8 p.m. Sunday, police responded to a call about gunshots in the 5200 block of Marion St.

There, they found Ellington in the driver’s seat of a maroon 2001 Oldsmobile suffering from a gunshot wound to the left side of his head.

Ellington, who lived in West Mt. Airy, would die several hours later at Albert Einstein Medical Center.

“My family and I are devastated,” Wayne Ellington Jr. said in a statement, according to NewsWorks content partner NBC10. “We appreciate everyone’s support and ask that you respect the privacy of our family during this very difficult time.”

The investigation into the homicide continues.
