Legendary newsman from old WDAS passes away

Friends of E. Steven Collins are remembering the Philadelphia broadcaster today after his passing at the age of 58.

E. Collings, as friends called him, could be heard on Philadelphia’s airwaves for more than three decades.  Many heard him first as the newscaster on WDAS both AM and FM.

State Sen. Vincent Hughes (D-Philadelphia) said he had lost a personal friend and an important journalist.

“He made everybody feel as important. It didn’t matter what your stature was or like what station you had in life. Everybody was important and everybody was treated with respect,” he said.

Hughes said guests prayed to be at the early part of Collings’ Sunday morning talk program because he’d cram in so many things he wanted to highlight, that he would run out of time before getting to all of it.
