Large wildfire burning in Bass River State Forest
UPDATE: As of late Friday afternoon, the wildfire is 90% contained at 464 acres, the NJFFS reports, citing rainfall as a major benefit.
Fire crews are battling a wildfire that is burning hundreds of acres tonight in Bass River State Forest.
According to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service, the fire is within a remote area of the state park near Munion Field and Dan Bridge Road.
The area, which straddles Burlington and Ocean counties, is to the west of the Garden State Parkway and north of the Mullica River.
As of 10:30 p.m., the fire is 60 percent contained at 464 acres, according to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service.
There is no threat to structures.
A light southeast wind is pushing the smoke toward the northwest. Seth Callen (@sethboyardee) on Twitter reported smelling smoke in Mercer County.
It was not immediately known what sparked the blaze.
