Imhotep-Neumann basketball rematch was not meant to be

In the end, Philadelphia high-school basketball fans were a mere six points away from seeing a rematch of this month’s rare Public League vs. Catholic League hoops championship.

Earlier this month, the Neumann-Goretti Saints defeated East Germantown’s Imhotep Panthers 52-51 in front of an estimated 3,000 fans at St. Joseph’s University for the PIAA District 12 Class AAA championship.

On Friday, both teams played in the subsequent state tournament. A pair of victories would have seen Imhotep face Neumann-Goretti in the state AAA semifinals.

Imhotep kept up its end of the bargain with a 61-50 victory over Abington Heights at William Allen Senior High School in Allentown. However, Neumann-Goretti lost 55-50 to the team from Donegal High School, located in Mt. Joy, Lancaster County.
