Imhotep-Neumann basketball rematch was not meant to be

In the end, Philadelphia high-school basketball fans were a mere six points away from seeing a rematch of this month’s rare Public League vs. Catholic League hoops championship.

Earlier this month, the Neumann-Goretti Saints defeated East Germantown’s Imhotep Panthers 52-51 in front of an estimated 3,000 fans at St. Joseph’s University for the PIAA District 12 Class AAA championship.

On Friday, both teams played in the subsequent state tournament. A pair of victories would have seen Imhotep face Neumann-Goretti in the state AAA semifinals.

Imhotep kept up its end of the bargain with a 61-50 victory over Abington Heights at William Allen Senior High School in Allentown. However, Neumann-Goretti lost 55-50 to the team from Donegal High School, located in Mt. Joy, Lancaster County.

The Panthers will face Donegal (29-2) on Tuesday night in the state AAA semifinals, with the winner advancing to Friday’s championship game in Hershey.

According to PennLive.com, Tuesday’s game will be played at Reading High School’s Geigle Complex, 7:30 p.m.
