Drug dealer gets 66 years in Philadelphia officer shooting
A judge has sentenced a 33-year-old man to at least 66 years in jail for charges related to the shooting and disabling of a Philadelphia police officer.
Common Pleas Court Judge Charles Ehrlich sentenced Eric Torres Wednesday on charges stemming from the shooting of 43-year-old Edward Davies.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reports Erlich called Torres a “gun-toting drug-dealing career criminal” and said the state sentencing guidelines did not account for people like him.
Jurors acquitted Torres of attempted murder in March but convicted him on aggravated assault, weapon and drug counts.
Ehrlich cited Torres’ history of arrests since arriving in Philadelphia from Puerto Rico in 2004.
The judge says Torres was on probation for assaulting a police officer during the Aug. 13, 2013, shooting inside the Almonte Mini Market.
