Disappointed New York runners seek places in Nov.18 Philly Marathon

Many disappointed runners from the canceled New York City Marathon are hoping to join the Philadelphia Marathon instead.

Last week, when the New York City Marathon canceled its race, Mayor Michael Nutter offered to host it in Philly instead.

That plan fell through, but many runners are now looking to join the Philadelphia Marathon Nov. 18.

Regular registrations are closed, but runners can still participate through partner charity organizations.

Janet Weyers, director of development at Covenant House, says her organization’s slots are all full.

“We have had tremendous amount of inquiries via phone and email since Friday late afternoon,” she said Monday. “We currently have over a hundred emails and people who are on a waiting list.”

She says they had 10 spots open before the New York City Marathon cancellation, but it was filled in a matter of hours.

These runners need to pledge at least $500, since it’s a part of a charity fundraiser.

The Philadelphia Marathon expects a full field this year — with 27,000 runners.
