Delaware police officer accused of assault

A police officer in Sussex County is on the other end of the law after being accused of assaulting an unidentified person in custody.

According to the Attorney General’s office, its Special Investigations Unit took on the case after a March incident at the Bethany Beach Police Department.

Bethany Beach Lieutenant Richard Haden is at the center of the investigation that began after a suspect claimed assault at the department’s headquarters on March 3rd. Earlier this week, investigators secured an indictment from the Sussex County Grand Jury officially chargng 45-year-old Haden with one count of 3rd Degree Assault. However, shortly after turning himself in to police in Georgetown, and being arraigned on Monday, April 22nd, Haden was released hours later on a $500 unsecured bond.

The Town of Bethany Beach referred the case to the Attorney General’s Office and continues to cooperate with investigators. In just a few weeks, the case will be up for review which has already been scheduled for May 20, 2013.
