The driver of a stolen car was killed after hitting two trees while fleeing from police in Newport early Wednesday morning.

The chase started around 12:20 Tuesday morning after a stolen car was reported on the 1300 block of Coleman St., just outside the city of Wilmington in Cleland Heights. An officer saw the stolen Cadillac sedan being driven without its headlights on and started following the car. As the car sped up, the officer lost sight of the suspect.

Other officers then joined the search, eventually spotting the stolen car driving at a high rate of speed without headlights on Maryland Ave. near S. DuPont Rd. Minutes later, the car was found crashed into a tree in the median near Justis St. and Augustine St. in Newport.

Investigators believe the car was going at an excessive speed when it hit a curb and crashed into several trees. The unidentified driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
