Cops: 8-year-old finds gun at playground, shoots his foot

Police say an 8-year-old was hospitalized after shooting himself in the foot with a gun he found in a Philadelphia playground.

But Chief Inspector Scott Small tells The Philadelphia Inquirer that no gun was immediately found and no witnesses could be located outside the East Germantown Recreation Center.

Police were notified shortly after 5 p.m. that the boy was brought to Einstein Medical Center by his family with a gunshot wound to his left foot.

Small says the family told officers the boy discovered a bag with a gun inside and accidentally shot himself.

Police secured a house on North 21st Street where the boy was initially taken and a second location for possible warrants in search of the gun.
