Cindy Bass reflects on death of former City Councilman Ed Schwartz

Ed Schwartz, a former city councilman at-large respected for his activism in Northwest Philadelphia and beyond, died on Thursday. Diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2010, he was 69.

Eighth District City Councilwoman Cindy Bass, who admired Schwartz and appreciated his support during her campaign last year, released a statement upon hearing the news:

“I am deeply saddened by the loss of Councilman Schwartz. He was a true champion for Philadelphia — in particular, the Northwest community — and for progressive values.

“Councilman Schwartz was my neighbor and my friend and he was very helpful in encouraging me throughout my political career.
