Fire destroys 100-year-old country club in Glenside

Fire has destroyed the clubhouse that’s more than a century old at a Montgomery County country club.

The fire at the LuLu Country Club in Glenside was reported about 6:30 a.m. Sunday.

Authorities don’t believe the fire is suspicious, though they were still working to determine how it started.

The clubhouse opened in 1912. The fire spread quickly because the building had a heavy timber roof with a large, open attic.

The fire appears to have started in a locker room area and smoke was first seen coming from the building’s basement.

Fort Washington Fire Chief Eric Clauson says more than 100 firefighters battled the blaze, and some had to come in to bring water from hydrants that were nearly a half-mile away.

    No one was hurt.
