Michael
Byrne, as Carlota Ttendant, has been master of ceremonies of Gay Bingo since
1996. He has been acting, performing and producing in and around Philadelphia
for the past 12 years and is a founding member of Big Mess Theatre, where
the first incarnations of Carlota Ttendant took shape. She is, as Michael
describes her, "not afraid of anything, and she's not afraid of speaking
her mind-- Carlota says things that I would never in a million years say."
Michael Byrne also works as the Manager of Special Events for Philadelphia's
Action AIDS, devising creative ways to raise money for AIDS in a time when
public recognition of the disease has waned.
"It's
not the new hot charity. Now that the epidemic has changed, and people are
living instead of dying, people have backed off from giving money to HIV
and AIDS. They think it's over. People are being affected every single day.
. . It's not over. And we will be here playing Gay Bingo until this crisis
is over." |
