Immy and Phila Ferrara,
whose son, Philip, passed away four years ago from AIDS, handle all of
the finances from a secure room far away from the Bingo action. At Gay
Bingo, volunteers are responsible for everything from ticket-sales to
building the set on stage to baking the cookies that are enjoyed at intermission.
Immy: " When I lost my son in 1994, the thing that I had to find in life
was a reason to get up in the morning, take a shower, get dressed and
get out the door. I found when I started to take care of people directly
that were infected with HIV, there was a sense of healing for me with
each person that came into my life. And also at that time was Gay Bingo.
My curiosity was absolutely piqued, and with my prior experience working
for banks for 13 years, I started to volunteer every time they had Bingo.
It gives me a wonderful reason to wake up tomorrow."
