What the Mexican consulate is telling immigrants

Many among the roughly 200,000 Mexicans and people of Mexican descent living in the Philadelphia area are worried as the Trump administration appears to be taking a hard line on immigration and prepares to construct a wall along the border.

Meanwhile, Philadelphia officials have continually offered support to Latin-Americans, even those here illegally, by refusing to actively work with federal immigration officials on deportation orders.

All the uncertainty has led scores of Mexicans to seek advice and other support at the Consulate of Mexico in Philadelphia. NewsWorks Tonight Host Dave Heller talked to Mexico’s head consul Alicia Kerber-Palmer about what advice she has been giving immigrants visiting her office.

Kerber-Palmer said unauthorized immigrants must ask themselves some tough questions.

Decide who will take care of your kids.
Decide who will sell your car.
Decide who will sell your house.

She also advised immigrants to open a bank account because it’s dangerous to carry all your money with you. Kerber-Palmer said the consulate has agreements with several banks that allow unauthorized immigrants to open an account with their Mexican identification cards.

In the Sound Cloud interview, she talks about the damage Trump’s rhetoric is having on U.S./Mexico relations, which includes millions of dollars spent by Mexican tourists in the U.S.
