"What is truly great about WHYY is the way you serve Delaware's citizens, especially through 12 Tonight -- which reports extensively about news and community affairs in the First State. Your outstanding information programs and educational services are enjoyed by my family and the Delaware community, and we wish you much continued success."

-- Thomas R. Carper,
Governor, State of Delaware

Host Dr. Dan Gottlieb is refocusing 91FM's Voices in the Family to emphasize mental wellness rather than mental illness.

Host Marty Moss-Coane brings the world closer to 91FM listeners for two hours each weekday on Radio Times. Marty's program ranges from neighborhood issues to interviews with world leaders, with opportunities for listeners to call in and add their perspectives.

Homegrown TV and Radio Productions

In the coming fiscal year, WHYY will produce more local and national programs that reflect the cultural richness of our region. In addition, the stations will produce "theme events" each month that tie together significant national programming with WHYY's own TV, radio, Internet and multimedia productions and presentations. The first event, "WHYY's Steppin' Out," launches the fall arts and culture season in September 1998.

TV12 and 91FM already produce a rich mix of programming for regional and national consumption, such as Fresh Air with Terry Gross (highlighted on page 7).

WHYY-FM's Radio Times host Marty Moss-Coane, one of the most respected and admired local interviewers, tackles issues of regional and national significance each weekday morning.

91FM's award-winning, in-depth local news, science and arts reports are often broadcast for a national audience through NPR. In addition, WHYY's Christmas with the Philadelphia Singers, Fresh Air Weekend and Voices in the Family Specials have aired nationally.

91FM listeners were kept current with election night coverage, political debates and other timely specials. They also had access to the words of great authors such as Alice Walker and Norman Mailer, with The Free Library of Philadelphia Building the Future Lecture Series. The station's Holocaust Remembrance documentary was updated with a new page on WHYY's Web site.

In a new partnership with the Opera Company of Philadelphia, 91FM broadcast the Company's recent season on Sunday afternoons, including productions of Norma, Daughter of the Regiment and La Traviata. Over 50,000 people listen to 91FM on an average Sunday afternoon, while only 2,800 can attend an operatic performance at the Academy of Music.

Continuing 91FM series include Voices in the Family, with Dr. Dan Gottlieb's weekly mental wellness program. Dr. Myrna Shure helped listeners raise a thinking child on Talking About Kids. Rittenhouse Hotel executive chef Jim Coleman revealed local culinary treasures on A Chef's Table. Franklin Institute chief astronomer Derrick Pitts and 91FM's Neil Tickner talked about the heavens on SkyTour specials and SkyTalk updates. And local listeners tuned in for the four-part series on Philadelphia Citizens for Children and Youth.

The People's Gospel at Colonus was the result of a strategic alliance with TV12, The People's Light and Theatre Company and 80 gospel singers from Coatesville-area churches. TV12's program documented a cross-cultural exchange of people meeting people whom they would otherwise not see, while recounting the compelling story of Oedipus.

WHYY's 12 Tonight, with its focus on the Delaware community, is the only nightly current affairs TV program broadcast throughout the First State. This year, the program produced special in-depth series, including "The Cost of Healing" on managed health care. The 12 Tonight staff also produced an independent special, Freedom's Edge, about that state's history with slavery.

TV12 continued to produce short Spotlights on local culture, art and artists; and the nationally distributed Flicks and Quick Pics, featuring movie makers and their movies. This year, WHYY added Community Connections, which follows specific programs with related local facts, helping connect our viewers to the world around them.
