"We are delighted to have WHYY as a new partner in our effort to better inform the public about the importance of Fairmount Park as a natural resource and the diversity of educational and recreational opportunities it provides."

-- William E. Mifflin,
Executive Director, Fairmount Park Commission

WHYY's broadcasts reach communities in the greater Philadelphia and Wilmington areas, as far south as southern Delaware and as far east as the New Jersey Shore.

WHYY met its financial expectations this fiscal year, and operating expenses remained well within acceptable ranges for efficient public broadcasting stations.

Half of WHYY's income came from individuals from more than 175,000 households who sent the station over $11 million. With an average gift of more than $67, these members' enthusiastic support demonstrates that WHYY's services and programs have real community relevance and value.

Our corporate, arts and cultural friends reach out to our community with program underwriting on TV12 and 91FM. Underwriter support messages, like WHYY's programming, provide important news and information about our partners, our world and our region. During fiscal year 1997-98, WHYY reached new levels of underwriting. Cumulatively, underwriters contributed more than $2 million dollars in support of TV12 and 91FM programs such as Fresh Air with Terry Gross, SkyTour, Nightly Business Report: Philadelphia Visit, A Chef's Table and many more. Local underwriting on 91FM exceeded $610,000 this year, an all-time record.

Thanks to more than 25,000 individuals responding-and 63 donors contributing over 270 prizes worth more than $70,000-WHYY's Jubilee of Prizes fundraising sweepstakes raised $443,000.

WHYY received other kinds of support, too, including grants and in-kind services from companies; individuals; foundations; and local, state and federal governments.

WHYY's first off-site producer, Leslye Mogford, documents the progress at Fairmount Park in this new collaboration.
