Cast: Kevin Costner, Rene Russo, Cheech Marin, Don Johnson

Quick Review: It's BULL DURHAM with romantic chemistry. I know, you thought Costner and Sarandon had that in the earlier film, but romance was rather arch. You just knew she would go with the next good-looking guy whose pitch she liked. Rene Russo brings a quality that works well with Costner: Kevin's danger on screen (and off, for that matter) is to come across as rather smug; Russo's vitality and sweetness cuts through that. They work well together.

As for the plot, it's about golf, or redemption, or chance-taking, or friendship, or love -- or all of those things -- but it does it all through golf. It doesn't necessarily go where you think it should, but that's a pleasant change as well. Whatever, the Kevin Costner who charmed us in NO WAY OUT and impressed us with his guts in DANCES WITH WOLVES is back on screen, and that's good. This is easily the best romantic comedy of the season [not "year", as they put in the ads -- not yet, at least].
