Quick Review: It will light your fuse! No film opened this summer with higher expectations, and despite a few problems, INDEPENDENCE DAY doesn't disappoint.Let's do the bad news first: The love scenes are so truncated, they're almost laughable. The women are not full characters. In fact, when the call goes out to the public for anybody who can fly a plane to volunteer to save the world, not a single woman pilot shows up. Some cuts don't connect properly, and some plot elements are questionable.
Having said that, there are three good reasons to see the film--the astounding digital effects, the refreshing sense of world community, and the moment when Jeff Goldblum's father (Judd Hirsch) tells him he's proud of him. I predict your fellow audience members will cheer.
