Lecture Segment
This segment includes a brief overview of the background and components of WHYY's Ready To Learn Service. RTL involves programs, publications and partnerships. The programs, which form the basis of the Service, are the many excellent children's television programs, currently airing on TV12.
There are many educational publications based on these television programs, such as curriculum materials, viewing guides, reading books, activity books and posters; as well as WHYY's own Ready To Learn Family News. Parents, teachers and child care providers receive instruction in how to use these educational materials to engage children in learning activities.
By offering these free RTL workshops to schools, parent groups, and child care organizations, productive partnerships are developed, which help to provide valuable interactive training and educational materials to those individuals in the community who have, teach or care for children.
Video Clips
Normally, three to six short video clips are shown which further illustrate the importance of critical television viewing skills, and the goals of Ready To Learn. The videos are excerpts from some of TV12's children's programs.
Group Discussion
Group discussion is used throughout workshop as a forum for allowing participants to: exchange experiences and information; examine how others use television; and comment on their perceptions regarding program content, and the impact these programs make on children. Participants take an active part in learning how to use TV12's children's television programs and accompanying instructional materials to help children learn.
Wrap-up
This section involves a review of the goals of Ready To Learn and the use of additional materials and resources (like books and libraries) to enhance the beneficial aspects of RTL techniques. A brief evaluation form and a certificate of attendance are usually given at the conclusion of this part of the workshop.
