Join WHYY and representatives from numerous local arts organizations for the official kick-off event for the 2012 Connections Festival. This exciting event will feature visual art displays, food and drink and performances featuring or inspired by Newsworks.org's Creative Connectors. The Creative Connectors are a group of 76 Philadelphia area arts leaders selected by LEADERSHIP Philadelphia in recognition of their ability to build community and economic vitality while creating art, culture, or design. This exciting kick off event will celebrate the arts and convene many of these "Connectors" — the unsung heroes who seem to know everyone and get things done "beneath the radar".

Outdoor film screening: Friday Arts
Race Street Pier, Columbus Blvd and Race Street, Philadelphia
Celebrate "First Friday" with WHYY and the DRWC at the newly refurbished Race Street Pier from 7 to 9 pm. Guests to this FREE event will enjoy live performances and preview the September episode of WHYY's Friday Arts. Guests will also have the opportunity to meet the producers of this Emmy-Award winning WHYY production.
Outdoor film screening: The Barnes Colletion
The Great Plaza at Penn's Landing, 201 South Columbus Blvd, Philadelphia
At 8 pm, guests are invited to the Great Plaza at Penn's Landing for a special FREE screening of WHYY's nationally broadcast TV documentary — The Barnes Collection. This exciting new film tells the story of Dr. Albert C. Barnes and the unique period in art history in which he lived and amassed his renowned collection. This special screening will also feature a preview of Ken Burns' latest film The Dust Bowl.

Connections Festival Concert
River Stage at the Great Plaza at Penn's Landing, 201 South Columbus Blvd, Philadelphia
Saturday's WHYY Connections Festival will be highlighted by a free concert which will feature performances by Yo La Tengo, Frank Turner, Maps & Atlases, Fabian Akilles, and The Lawsuits. First Person Arts' award-winning storyteller, Martha Cooney, will also perform and the Hussian School of Art will be painting artwork inspired by the festival throughout the day. WHYY Members are encouraged to come to the Member Oasis tent from 1pm-3pm for a special Members Only Sound Opinions Lecture and Maker's Mark Bourbon Tasting with Sound Opinions hosts' Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot. Throughout the Saturday concert, WHYY Members will have access to the WHYY Member Oasis Tent, which will feature free refreshments and opportunities to meet the bands. All are invited to continue the fun with WHYY at the Yards Afterparty with The Lawsuits at Yards Brewing Company starting at 10pm.
WHYY's On Canvas — During this exciting concert, producers of WHYY's Emmy-Award winning performing arts show, On Canvas, will be on hand to film interviews and performances that will be broadcast as part of the show's 2013 season. On Canvas filmed performances from Justin Townes Earle and The Baseball Project at the 2011 Connections Festival.
Kids Activities/Coast Day
The Great Plaza at Penn's Landing, 201 South Columbus Blvd, Philadelphia
During the Saturday concert festivities, the WHYY Kids Club will have costumed characters, crafts and more at the Great Plaza as part of the 11th Annual Pennsylvania Coast Day program. Coast Day will take place near the Independence Seaport Museum (next to the Great Plaza) and will feature displays, exhibits and fun experiments from a wide array of area environmental education groups!

2012 Philadelphia Doo-Wop Festival

WHYY and the DRWC are proud to partner with the Philadelphia Veterans Multi-Service & Education Center to present the 2012 Philadelphia Doo-Wop Festival! This free concert will feature performances by Fred Paris and the Five Satins, Charlie Gracie, The Del Satins and more!
The Philadelphia Veterans Multi-Service & Education Center is a non-profit group that aims to provide employment, training, and related educational services to all facets of the community, especially Veterans, regardless of their station in life. In addition, they offer social and human services, counseling, and referrals to less fortunate clients experiencing barriers in finding their way back into the mainstream of society.
