The gray area of drug recovery homes

June 8, 2017

Many recovery homes in Philadelphia are not licensed, unregulated and are illegally receiving thousands of dollars per month from drug treatment centers. On the streets, this practice is known as “pimping out” where opioid addicts are forced to attend so-called group therapy sessions at drug treatment centers or face eviction from their recovery home. Marty talks with Philadelphia Inquirer reporter, ALFRED LUBRANO who has been covering this story and urban studies professor at University of Pennsylvania and author of How it Works: Recovering Citizens in Post-Welfare Philadelphia, ROBERT FAIRBANKS, about what looks like a lucrative, complex, and illegal scam. JENNIFER SMITH, Acting Secretary of Drug and Alcohol Programs will discuss how the state is responding to the opioid epidemic, monitoring drug treatment centers, and dealing with the proliferation of recovery homes.
