Cease-fire in Gaza

August 6, 2014

Guests: Daniel Kurtzer, Khaled Elgindy

The 72-hour cease-fire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza continues to hold into the second day.  Delegations for Israel and Hamas are in Cairo to begin talks for a more permanent truce.  The war that started four weeks ago has killed 1800 Palestinians and 64 Israeli soldiers and three Israeli civilians.  This hour, we look at the cease-fire and the potential for a more lasting peace.  Our guests, KHALED ELGINDY and DANIEL KURTZER, have played key roles on both sides of the peace negotiations.  Elgindy is a fellow at the Brookings Institution and served as an advisor to the Palestinian leadership in Ramallah.  Daniel Kurtzer, a Princeton University professor, served as U.S. Ambassador to Egypt and Israel during his 29 years in the U.S. Foreign Service.
