January 23, 2014
Guests: Nathaniel Popper and Bob Sullivan
According to a new report prepared for the federal government, the holiday season security breach of several major retailers including Target was conducted by a group of Eastern European hackers. Using sophisticated malware that attacked corporate payment systems, the data thieves were able to capture the credit card numbers and other personal information on up to 110 million customers. We’ll get details on how the hackers infiltrated those systems from NATHANIEL POPPER who has been covering the story for the New York Times. Then we’ll be turn to consumer advocate and journalist BOB SULLIVAN to help us understand the technology available to avoid future breaches, what consumers should do if they are victims of credit card data theft, and how we all can avoid it.
