Philadelphia’s Chinatown: change, smart growth and challenges
November 13, 2013
Guests: John Chin and Dominic Vitiello
A new study of Chinatowns in Philadelphia, Boston and New York documents the interesting changes in demographics and character facing these unique neighborhoods. In Philadelphia, Chinatown has long been the gateway for immigrants from Asia and a home for multi-generational and working class families. In recent years, however, the neighborhood has seen increasing gentrification and rising property values because of its proximity to a vibrant Center City. This morning we’ll talk about the changes facing Philadelphia’s Chinatown and others like it and explore how this unique community can preserve its identity while encouraging smart growth. Our guests are JOHN CHIN, executive director of the Philadelphia Chinatown Development Corporation and University of Pennsylvania urban planner DOMINIC VITIELLO.
