How to (and how not to) say “I’m sorry”

Listen

Guests: Lauren Bloom and Edward Monte

Last week was a big one for public apologies. The President apologized for problems Americans were having signing up online for new health care plans. Broadcast journalist Lara Logan apologized for mistakes in her reporting on the Benghazi attacks. And the founder of the fitness clothing line Lululemon posted a video in which he said he was sorry about telling some women they were too overweight to wear his pants. That got us thinking about what makes for a good apology and why are some more believable than others? Why is it sometimes hard to say “I’m sorry,” and why are some people more forgiving than others? We’ll talk about how to apologize with two guests – LAUREN BLOOM, the author of the forthcoming Art of the Apology: How, When, and Why to Give and Accept Apologies and EDWARD MONTE, an individual and couples therapist in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
