Gov. Corbett's Medicaid expansion plan
September 20, 2013
Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett said this week that he wants to expand Medicaid to 520,000 more low income residents but only if he can overhaul the state’s current Medicaid system. Corbett’s proposal would use the federal money available under Obamacare to allow Medicaid recipients to buy private insurance but he wants work requirements and premiums added to the eligibility rules. This hour, we look at the Governor’s proposal, if the federal government is likely to grant his exceptions, and what it all means for low income Pennsylvanians. Guest host Tracey Matisak talks with JOHN MICEK, editor for The Patriot-News, about the politics of the Governor’s alternative expansion plan. Then, we’ll debate it with RICHARD WEISHAUPT, Senior Attorney at Community Legal Services in Philadelphia and NATE BENEFIELD, Director of Policy Analysis for the Commonwealth Foundation for Public Policy Alternatives.
