The Barefoot Artist

“If you don’t rise to the occasion the best of you will die, and the rest of you will not amount to anything. I was too scared to be a coward.” Born in China, and a resident of Philadelphia, award-winning visual artist and urban designer, LILY YEH returns to Radio Times to discuss a very large work – her life. In the new film, The Barefoot Artist, created with filmmakers GLENN HOLSTEN and DANIEL TRAUB (Yeh’s son), we follow Lily to her ancestral home in Hainan, China, to reconcile unresolved issues that troubled her war hero father. Yeh has been a highly visual artist for over 20 years in Philadelphia for co-founding and directing North Philadelphia’s The Village of Arts and Humanities, remodeling over 200 vacant city lots into engaging green spaces. In addition to her work in North Philadelphia, she has created healing art in Rwanda and Kenya.
