Montco gay marriage
August 8, 2013
It’s been a watershed year for the movement to legalize gay marriage. In June, the Supreme Court made two historic rulings backing same-sex marriage, giving gay couples entitlement to the same federal benefits as straight couples, and effectively striking down California’s ban on gay marriage. But in Pennsylvania, where gay marriage remains illegal, the issue continues to be a divisive one. Montgomery County’s Register of Wills, D Bruce Hanes has started issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples, in defiance of state law. He’s now being sued by the Pennsylvanian Department of Health, which says Hanes is causing “administrative and legal chaos”. We’ll speak to D BRUCE HANES, the Montgomery County Register of Wills, about his decision to let gay couples tie the knot. We’re also joined by Montgomery County Commissioner BRUCE CASTOR, who’s also a lawyer and a Republican, and CHRISTOPHER BORICK, Professor of Political Science at Muhlenberg College and Director of the Muhlenberg College Institute of Public Opinion.
