Former Congressman Mickey Edwards on why political parties are the real problem with government

January 23, 2013

In his new book, The Parties Versus the People:¬† How to Turn Republicans and Democrats into Americans, former Republican Congressman MICKEY EDWARDS argues that it is the political parties that are the root of dysfunction in American government.¬† He says our current political system discourages compromise and undermines democracy and says the only solution is to eliminate the negative effects partisan warfare has on government.¬† Edwards was a Republican Congressman from Oklahoma for 16 years and has been an outspoken critic of his party, contending that the modern conservative movement has lost its principles. He is a co-founder of No Labels, which describes itself as “a grassroots organization of citizens from across the political spectrum working to help move America from the old politics of point-scoring toward a new politics of problem solving.”
