The Petraeus affair & its ramifications

November 14, 2012

Hour 1

A stunning scandal has triggered the resignation of the most important military leader of modern U.S. history, David Petraeus, and has his successor of commander of the U.S. and NATO forces at war in Afghanistan, Gen. John Allen, under investigation. Petraeus attributed his resignation Friday as CIA director to an affair with Paula Broadwell, a reservist and the author of his biography, “All In.” The e-mail traffic between Petraeus and Broadwell, and then apparently Broadwell and Tampa socialite, Jill Kelley, and then between Kelley and Gen. Allen, have raised questions about improper relationships, improper use of private e-mail accounts, national security, the strain of military life on families, and more. Joining us to help understand the story thus far and the questions it’s raising are NOAH SCHACTMAN, editor of WIRED’s Danger Room Blog, and DOUGLAS OLLIVANT, a Senior National Security Fellow with the New America Foundation and a retired Army officer who was part of Petraeus’ inner circle.
