A look at drilling for natural gas in the Marcellus Shale region

The new technology that can extract the deep, gas resources of Pennsylvania’s Marcellus Shale has created a complex divide among residents, government and industry about the promise of a low-emission, fossil-fuel bridge to American energy independence, amid the concerns of the long-term effects on the region’s drinking water and air. Activists opposed to the drilling are concerned about the safety of hydraulic fracturing (fracking) as others have pointed out utility rates are lower and jobs have been created. Our guests are JOHN HANGER, the former Secretary of Pennsylvania’s Department of Environmental Protection, and writer and ecologist, SANDRA STEINGRABER.  They’re in Philadelphia for the Shale Gas Insight conference and Shale Gas Outrage rally.
