Character and leadership

July 25, 2012

Hour 1

What makes a great leader? Why do some companies thrive in uncertainty and others fail? New technologies, the unstable economy and the unconventional habits of high-profile CEOs show leadership has different skills and sensibilities. Our guest, MICHAEL USEEM, University of Pennsylvania professor of management, just returned from one of his many ventures to Mt. Everest with a group of managers, and he’ll come in to explain how he uses physical expeditions to teach leadership, governance, teamwork, and decisionmaking at Penn’s Center for Leadership and Change Management. We’ll ask how Useem suggests applying of some of the core principles in his recent book, “The Leader’s Checklist,” including conveying one’s character, dampening over-optimism and building leadership in others, in real-life situations.
