Daniel Smith's memoir of anxiety
July 11, 2012
Can anxiety be controlled, and perhaps cured? Journalist DANIEL SMITH is sweating this concept out. The writer was set up for anxiety – he suffered an early childhood near-drowning, had a traumatic, aggressive introduction to sex, and went to college at "one of the world’s anxiety epicenters,” which manifested what soon identified him. And to top it off, he has hyperhidrosis – an excessive sweating disorder. The admitted would-be stand up comic, and Bryn Mawr College lecturer’s new book, "Monkey Mind: A Memoir of Anxiety,” chronicles Smith’s navigation of his unpredictable mind, mixed with an amateur intellectual history of anxiety and its influence in our culture.
