Visiting national parks before climate changes them
June 5, 2012
MICHAEL LANZA is a longtime backpacker, climber, skier and freelance writer and photographer of outdoors and wilderness. He is the northwest editor of Backpacker magazine, where he chronicled the effects of climate change on Montana’s Glacier National Park and other wild lands. His latest book, “Before They’re Gone: A Family’s Year-Long Quest to Explore America’s Most Endangered National Parks,” was inspired by his desire to share his love for America’s national parks with his two young children, before they were irrevocably changed by the warming climate. His book is part travelogue, part family memoir, part call to arms about the threats already devastating the nation’s natural treasures.
