According to our guest, SUSAN HERMAN, president of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the greatest casualty of the war on terror is the assault on the U.S. Constitution. Of particular concern to Herman is the 10-year old Patriot Act, which she says severely restricts our freedoms of speech, association and religion, and due process, for example. She says post-9/11 surveillance measures have made it far too easy for the government to access information about our personal and professional lives threatening our right to privacy and protection against unreasonable searches and seizures. In her new book, Taking Liberties: The War on Terror and the Erosion of American Democracy, Herman weaves her analysis of constitutional law with compelling portraits of ordinary Americans whose lives have been dramatically impacted by our post-9/11 anti-terrorism strategies.
