August 10, 2011

Hour 1

Students from KIPP Philadelphia Charter Schools

KIPP (Knowledge is Power Program) and Mastery Charter Schools are considered two of the most successful charter school operators in Philadelphia. Both are college-preparatory, have longer school days and Saturday classes, and both aim to create environments and cultures which demand and expect excellence.  KIPP Philadelphia Charter Schools were founded in 2003 as part of a national network of charter schools serving over 26,000 students in 99 schools in 20  states and the District of Columbia.  There are four KIPP schools in Philadelphia and all share a commmon mission based on five pillars: High Expectations, Choice & Commitment. More Time. Power to Lead and Focus on Results. Mastery opened in 2001 and now runs seven schools serving 4,100 students in grades K-12.  The Philadelphia non-profit specializes in “turning around” low-performing schools.  As part of our series this summer focusing on the education landscape in Philadelphia, we’ve invited the CEO’s of both organizations to join us in the studio.  Our guests are MARC MANNELLA CEO of KIPP Philadelphia Charter Schools and SCOTT GORDON, CEO of Mastery Charter Schools.
