Is It OK to Cry at Work?

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

Hour 2

How much emotion can you show at work? Is it okay to cry at your desk once in a while? And if you do cry, does it reflect how much you like your job? Our guest, former corporate executive vice president and writer ANNE KREAMER, has researched occupational frustration and put her findings into a new book, It's Always Personal: Emotions in the New Workplace. According to neurologist William Frey, women cry four times as much as men on the job (and for different reasons than men), and are more critical of each other’s tears. But in the culture of the male U.S. Speaker of the House crying publicly; the proliferation of Botox injections; and the workplace being more diverse and more personal than ever before, reactions to the emotional expression of colleagues are still fuzzy.
