Lighting the Future: Incandescents, Compact Fluorescents, or LEDs?

March 28, 2011

Hour 2

There’s a run on 100 watt incandescent bulbs.  With new energy efficiency standards for light bulbs going into effect in 2012, 100 watts will become obsolete leading some people to hoard them.  Under the 2007 law, the old incandescents will be required to use 30% less energy while producing the same amount of light.  But there are other lighting options — halogen, compact fluorescent, LEDs.  This hour, RUSS LESLIE, associate director of the Lighting Research Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute will help us make sense of all our lighting choices.  And we’ll also hear from JACOB SULLUM, a senior editor at Reason Magazine, about why the government shouldn’t be regulating light bulbs.
