Emerging Treatments in Depression

Hour 2
Depression can be a debilitating but treatable disease. The winter’s dark months may be the toughest time of year for some, bringing on Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), which counts sadness, hopelessness, guilt and low energy among its symptoms. Our guest, DR. JOHN O’REARDON, Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania, knows there’s hope for his patients. O’Reardon is the Director of the Treatment Resistant Depression Clinic, which explores emerging treatments for the more severely depressed such as using magnets (TMS) and an implant-type of device that works as a kind of pacemaker for one’s brain (VNS). On today’s Radio Times, we’ll discuss O’Reardon’s recommendations for SAD, including light therapy, and the new technical and traditional methods for those suffering from depression.
