National political roundup, with Jill Lawrence & Julian E. Zelizer

Friday, June 11th, 2010

Hour 1
As the effort led by BP and the government attempts to contain the disastrous oil spill befouling the Gulf of Mexico, President Obama strains to contain the stain spreading across his domestic agenda and his administration’s attempts to be “no-drama” and appear competent. Meanwhile, Tuesday's primary elections saw women politicians, many of them conservative, many of them first-time candidates, win major victories in California, South Carolina and Arkansas. And the bizarre victory of unemployed and obscure Alvin Greene in the Democratic race to face Republican Senator Jim DeMint in South Carolina is stranger than fiction. All this and more will be up for discussion on today's "Radio Times," when Marty surveys the week’s political news with JILL LAWRENCE, columnist for PoliticsDaily.com, and JULIAN E. ZELIZER, Professor of History and Public Affairs at Princeton University.

Take your kids to the park…and leave them there!

Friday, June 11th, 2010

Hour 2
How much independence should we give our young children? We'll listen back to an interview Marty did this winter with writer LENORE SKENAZY. In 2008 Skenazy intentionally let her nine-year old son ride the subway alone in Manhattan and wrote about it in her column in the "New York Sun." Soon after a flurry of interviews and appearances on TV talk shows, Skenazy's name came up in Google as "America’s Worst Mom." Skenazy's response to her experience and her op-ed observations of over-sensitive parenting is expressed in a blog, Freerangekids.com, and a book: "Free Range Kids: Giving our Kids the Freedom We Enjoyed Without Going Nuts with Worry." Skenazy’s recent project in May was 'Take Your Kids to the Park and Leave Them There Day.'
