A grand jury's scathing take on PA Legislature

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

Hour 1
On May 24, an investigating grand jury delivered a stinging report on the nature of the Pennsylvania legislature to legislative leaders. They found what they called "a 'time warp' of public corruption" in Harrisburg's legislative caucuses after more than two years of research in the wake of Bonusgate. Their findings prompted their supervising judge to quote the movie "Network" and declare that he was "mad as hell and… not going to take this anymore." On today's "Radio Times," we'll talk about that grand jury report, its recommendations and its reception in Harrisburg, with BRAD BUMSTED, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review's state Capitol reporter and TIM POTTS, co-founder of the government reform nonprofit, Democracy Rising PA. We'll also hear from Pennsylvania State Senator DAYLIN LEACH, a Montgomery County Democrat who thinks the grand jury got it 'dead wrong.'

A meth-addicted Ozark Mountain Family Affair

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

Hour 2
A new film looks at the odyssey of a strong 17-year-old girl, Ree, abandoned by her meth-cooker father, leaving her to take care of her incapacitated mother and two young siblings. The family's house is put up for his bail bond leaving Ree to go on the hunt in the Ozark Mountain woods to find him through her strung-out, outlaw family to keep her family from being thrown out of their home. Our guest, director DEBRA GRANIK will describe her filmmaking journey in making the Sundance 2010 Grand Jury Prize-winning, "Winter’s Bone," adapted from Daniel Woodrell’s novel of the same name. PATRICK CARR, Associate Professor of Sociology at Rutgers University, will also join us in the conversation to talk about his work with America's rural poor.
