Leo Damrosch on 'Tocqueville's Discovery of America'
May 12
Hour 2
Young French diplomat Alexis de Tocqueville's observations about the young democracy across the Atlantic have reverberated through the centuries. In his new book, "Tocqueville's Discovery of America," Harvard Professor and 2005 national book award finalist LEO DAMROSCH offers an accessible entrée into the life and ideas of Tocqueville, in the form of a travel narrative about the journey that he made to America with his good friend Beaumont in 1831. Along the way, Damrosch's analysis of America in 1831 sheds light on essential traits of U.S. democracy that are very relevant today.
