The Poker Bride

Monday, March 8th, 2010

January1420101113ampokerbride[1]Hour 2

Our guest, writer CHRISTOPHER CORBETT thinks there's no better place in time that mixes history and mythology than the American West. He returns to Radio Times to talk about his new book, The Poker Bride: The First Chinese in the West, about the difficult Chinese sojourners' experience in the Gold Rush of 1840s. As he examines the violent, romantic, true and tall-tales of the pioneers, he tells the story of Polly Bemis, one of Idaho’s most famous legends: a young Chinese woman, who was allegedly sold out of life of prostitution into a better, but rugged life in the Idaho Hills through a poker game.
